    Handel's Oratorio "Messiah"

    G. F. Handel (1685-1759) Messiah

It is not easy for a single work to be steadily loved from the time of its creation to the later generation. We add the word 'classic' to those works, but in reality, there are just few pieces of classical music that have been persistently performed with favorable reviews from the composer's lifetime to the modern day. Sometimes, composers die without seeing the success of their pieces, and the famous works of the time are sometimes forgotten without a trace. It is perhaps a miracle to be loved by many people beyond the limits of time and region. And such a work is Handel's 'Messiah'. Let's take a look at the context in which 'Messiah' was born.

Handel's oratorio "Messiah," composed in just a few weeks from August 22 to September 14, 1741, is a true classic among classics that has never disappeared from concert repertoire. It is now loved during the Christmas season, but the premiere actually took place during the Easter season the following year. Messiah, which premiered at the Music Hall in Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742, was written by Charles Jennens, who was in a close relationship with Handel. While most of Handel's oratorios storify the Old Testament, Messiah is based on the New Testament. While oratorios typically have clear characters and plots despite their religious content, "Messiah" is divided into three parts without specific characters, conveying the meaning of Jesus' birth, death, resurrection, and salvation. As a result, it can be seen as somewhat philosophical. Despite a religious music, the lively rhythm of "Messiah" evokes a delight like jubilance in the listener. The elaborate melisma that appears throughout the solos and choruses brings to mind Handel's operas. In addition to the enchantment of the choral passages that alternately introduces the emphasis of lyrics and the splendor of music by evenly fusing polyphonic and harmonious plots, the dynamic orchestra's drive is accompanied.

Handel's "Messiah" was performed over ten times during his lifetime. Just days before he passed away at the age of 74, the last performance he attended was  "Messiah." And Handel never laid down his pen during those performances. Handel kept making revisions, adapting the music most suitable to the circumstances and the available instruments and singers. Here we witness once again Handel's adaptability to the circumstances. Rather than insisting on his ideal music in his imagination, his willingness to create the best out of each situation he encountered is particularly meaningful in this era where we live.

We live in an era where everything is continuously and rapidly changing beyond our imagination. Perhaps we live in a time when we need to change direction. It goes same with the way we enjoy music. The Messiah tells us to enjoy the moment to the fullest. And it reminds us that the romanticized '"Messiah" we know is not the only option available.
