"Two Voices“
Among the ESG projects for the sustainability of mankind, the meaning of S (society) is conveyed to the audience through a message in music under the title “Two Voices”. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle said that "Human beings are social animals." As such, humans cannot live alone, away from the society. Thus, humans must live together, not alone. In this concert, we want to offer time to reflect on human life - joy, sorrow, and pleasure - through music, and think about how to create the society we live in with our neighbors.
In this concert, composer Cho Seon-hee’s creative song in tune with the thematic sound of Dongdong, a Goryeo song, and Saryang(思量) for Chamber Orchestra will be performed at the world premiere. She was commissioned last year (2024) to work on this project. Her work was composed with a modern sense based on the lyrics of the representative Goryeo song Dongdong, and is entitled Saryang, an old Korean word for love. That piece of work is called Yeochang Gagok (female song), the Korea’s traditional sound. Symphony No. 4 in G major (1899-1901/arr. 2007), Mahler's signature symphony and its vocal piece called The Heavenly Life from the fourth movement, will be performed for the first time in Korea by soprano Yoon Ji in a chamber ensemble version.
In this concert, along with the newly composed piece based on Dongdong, a Goryo song, under the theme of Two Voices, Mahler's representative vocal piece the Heavenly Life conveys the message of "creating a future where everyone lives together without hostility, respecting the diversity of all individuals in this era of deepening polarization. The need to reflect on the value of coexistence is emerging once again around the world, and we would like to convey the message of social integration that "a righteous society can be built when all humans live peacefully together."
