- Took the military examination, but failed after falling off a horse (age 28) 1576: Passed the military examination after 10 years of learning martial arts. Assigned as administrator (權管, junior grade of the ninth rank) of Dongguibibo (童仇非堡) in Hamgyeong province in December. Became an entry-level officer in the army and defended the border settlements (age 32).

- Assigned as Balpojin Sugunmanho (鉢浦鎭水軍萬戶, junior grade of the fourth rank) under the Jeolla Province Left Naval District (全羅左水營). First involvement with the navy (age 36).

- Doubled as the Nokdundo Dunjeongwan (responsible for the defense and management of military installations; 鹿屯島屯田官) in Hamgyeong province. Despite successfully repelling a surprise attack by the Jurchen, Yi was stripped of his rank due to sabotage from the Bukbyeong (Northern frontier solider; 北兵使), and subsequently fought as an enlisted soldier (age 43).

- Assigned as commander-in-chief of three provinces (三道水軍統制使) (age 49).

- Fought and defeated over 130 Japanese ships in the Battle of Myeongnyang (age 53)
- 1598
- Fought Japanese naval forces at Noryang in the southern sea, defeating more than 200 ships. Died from a gunshot wound during the battle (age 54).
