Seoul Metropolitan Dance Theatre, established in 1974, has repeatedly examined its purpose and engaged in rigorous creative endeavors in order to play its social function and role as an artistic institution. The theater’s journey of self-reflection and evolution can be seen in its numerous domestic and international performances spanning over the past 40 years.
It has excellently represented Korea as a dance theatre at various international events and festivals, including the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Closing Ceremony and the 1990 Beijing Asian Games Arts Festival, WDA Philadelphia Performance, South America Concert Tour, 2000 Special Performance at the Asia-Pacific Cultural Mayors' Meeting in Taiwan, the 2002 Japan-Korea People-to-People Exchange Year in Osaka, Japan, the 2003 Europe, the USA Concert Tour, the 2006 and 2007 Asia Stage Arts Festival, the 2008 Japan-Korea Year of Tourism Exchange Year–Kyoto Invited Performance, the 2009 Northern Europe Concert Tour, the 2011 China Shanghai International Arts Festival, etc. The theatre has received invitations to partake in international cultural festivals, elevating the global recognition of Korean dance and contributing to international cultural exchange.
