The tragedy of a human standing before an unopened door

The three creators who met through the musical Neighborhood—playwright Kang Nam, composer Kim Hyo-eun, and director Lee Junwoo—are set to present a new solo theatre unlike anything seen in traditional theater or musicals at Sync Next 25.

The Door Within the Door is a modern reinterpretation of H.G. Wells' 1906 short story The Door in the Wall. The award-winning duo of Kang Nam and Kim Hyoeun, who swept the 4th Korea Musical Awards with HOPE: The Unread Book and the Unread Life, delve deeper into the human desire caught between dreams and reality. Meanwhile, Lee Junwoo, known for his diverse directorial range spanning classical theater to original musicals such as Red Leaves and Hongryeon, crafts a groundbreaking stage featuring unique techniques and intensely detailed performances.

Amid the media frenzy surrounding the death of the successful politician Wellers, his longtime friend Redmond, whom Wellers visited just before his death, is summoned for police questioning. As the camera's recording button is pressed, Redmond’s testimony begins.

Before the camera, Redmond mimics his late friend, portraying the polished image of a successful politician. Yet, as the recorded footage plays, another Redmond emerges—the one who reveals his true story. Through the confrontation between the "false self" captured on film and the "true self" on stage, the play delves into the conflict between constructed illusions and inner truths.

Kang Nam

Kang Nam enjoys performances and creating them are both sources of great passion. She continuously explores ways to pursue both and remains an ongoing endeavor. 

Winner of the 4th Korea Musical Awards for Best Playwriting for the musical Hope: The Unread Book and the Unread Life. Kang Nam wrote the scripts for the musicals The Neighborhood, Four Minutes, and The Priests, as well as plays including The Crossroads and The Young(Old) Clown.

Kim Hyoeun

Kim Hyoeun is a curious free spirit, delights in everything from mild Korean namul (seasoned vegetables) to bold Middle Eastern spices that set the tongue ablaze. The same goes for her music—she embraces all genres and forms without hesitation. Composing songs in places like Paris, Tokyo, and Ansan, she dreams of creating art beyond the reach of AI. 

Winner of the 4th Korea Musical Awards in the Composition category for the musical Hope: The Unread Book and the Unread Life. Kim Hyoeun composed music for the musicals Nabilera, The Neighborhood.

Lee Junwoo

Lee Junwoo is a theater director and serves as the artistic director and representative of Vaeda.

Winner of the Best Play and Best Newcomer Award at the 58th Dong A Theater Awards for the play Red Leaves. Lee Junwoo directed the play The Story of Wang Seo Dog and the musicals Neighborhood and Hongryeon. Lee Junwoo’s directing credits include plays such as Jekyll and Hyde, BEA, Our Little Sister, Faust, and The Tale of Wang Seogae, as well as musicals like Hongryeon and The Neighborhood.
