Atelier Gwanghwa, located in Gwanghwamun Square, the center of Korea's history and culture, is an urban media façade platform that transforms the exterior wall of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts into an immense canvas of light.

The name Atelier Gwanghwa brings together atelier, the French word for an artist's workspace, and Gwanghwa (光化), the name of a place that has long stood at the center of history and culture.

True to its name, Atelier Gwanghwa is an open cultural space where art, technology, and the everyday lives of the city's residents meet, and it presents new possibilities for Gwanghwamun Square. Through an art of light that makes use of the Sejong Center's exterior wall, it also expands a familiar urban landscape into a space of new sensation, seeking to offer the city's residents an extraordinary artistic experience within everyday life.

    Infusing Light

Infusing Light, the third exhibition of Atelier Gwanghwa in 2026, translates into light the time and the senses that have settled layer upon layer at Gwanghwamun, drawing the inner life of the individual and its relationship with the city into a single continuum.

HAN SeungKu explores the self as it hides and reveals itself within relationships. Ilinx opens a space of meditation in the middle of the city and proposes a time of healing in which the traces of daily life are emptied out. MirrorMask: The Self Beyond the Boundary reveals the possibility of a new existence through the collision and integration of the social mask and the fundamental self.

HONG NaKyum looks at the city as a single living network of relations, through invisible currents of light and through movement that repeats. Beneath Gwanghwamun: The Invisible Network of Relations captures the movement of people passing through the underground of Gwanghwamun and visualizes the city's unseen structures of connection. Synapses of the City: A Living Network of Light crosses the light of the Hangang River with the sound of crickets and presents the city as a single organism joined by light and sound.

Setting out from different perspectives, the work of the two artists crosses in a single place, and expands light beyond a purely visual phenomenon into a medium of relation, memory, and time. We warmly invite you to this exhibition, which unfolds within that current a new sensory landscape of the city we live in.

    HAN SeungKu llinx

    2023, Full 3D animation, 1:36

Ilinx is one of the four categories of play: a state in which immersion unsettles the stability of perception and brings on a momentary vertigo and a shift in consciousness. It lets the self of everyday reality be forgotten for a while, and draws the mind away from its wounds to dwell in another space of consciousness. This forgetting of reality resembles the Buddhist idea of emptiness (空), in which one empties the mind through meditation and looks within. Emptiness is a state of being void, yet at the same time one that cradles the possibility of change and recovery.

The work condenses this concept into the principal Buddha of Seokguram Grotto, seeking to open a time of healing and recovery in which the self is set down for a moment and passes through meditation and reflection.

MirrorMask: The Self Beyond the Boundary

    2026, Full 3D animation, 4:00

The mask is the social self, formed within one's relations with others. Through education, institutions, norms, and the gaze of society, human beings build a social self, and within it they experience the boundary with the fundamental self.

The work shows the process by which the self is transformed, in three stages: the forming of the mask, the duality and the boundary of the mask, and the new self. The factory and its mechanical systems stand for the making of the social self, while the mirror and the repeating faces symbolize the anguish between the fundamental self and the social self. Finally, the palace, the cloak, and the particles of differing colors condense the process by which the two selves move beyond collision into harmony and are integrated into a new self.

    HONG NaKyum

Beneath Gwanghwamun: The Invisible Network of Relations

    2026, single-channel video, color, sound, 3:00

The work reconstructs the movement and the traces of people recorded at Gwanghwamun and in the Seoul subway, rendered in a thermal-imaging palette.

The thermal image is not an effect that reproduces actual temperature; it is the artist's visual language for looking at human movement beyond individual faces and identities.

The movements of countless individuals, traveling without recognizing one another, repeat and cross to form a single rhythm. The signals of the city and the sounds recorded on site join with these movements to expand the city's time into something felt. Through that flow, the work asks how people connect the city.

Synapses of the City: A Living Network of Light

    2026, single-channel video, color, sound, 3:00

The work reconstructs the ripples recorded on the Hangang River and the lights of the city as a color spectrum centered on blue. Light reflected and shifting on the water becomes a single signal linking different spaces and different times. Joining the light of the Hangang River with sound gathered on site, the work reveals the invisible network of relations that makes up the city.

The small movements of light on screen connect and expand, forming a living neural network that circulates through the whole city like a synapse. Through that flow, the work asks "how light connects the city."
