Established in 1961, Seoul Metropolitan Musical Theatre holds the distinction of being the first musical institution in Korea. It has played a role in revitalizing creative musicals through the development of creative plays and also expanded the audiences of cultural arts by presenting high-quality family musicals that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.
The Yegreen Music Company, which introduced musicals in 1961 with the aim of internationalizing Korean traditional arts, was the precursor to the Seoul Metropolitan Musical Theatre. It later underwent several name changes, evolving into the Seoul Music and Dance Company, the National Music and Dance Company in 1972, the Seoul Metropolitan Musical Company in 1977. Finally, in 1999, the incorporation of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts led to the establishment of the Seoul Metropolitan Musical Theatre under its current name.
It has actively promoted Korean culture and arts on the global stage through its participation in various international events. These include the North-South Red Cross Arts Exchange Performance in 1985, the 1988 Olympic Cultural and Arts Mission’s Concert Tour to the United States in 1987, the 1988 Olympic Cultural and Arts Festival Performance in 1988, and the Korea-Japan Cultural and Arts Exchange Performance in 2009.
The Seoul Metropolitan Musical Theatre has also showcased diverse musicals, including foreign musicals such as "Don Quixote," "Fantasticks," "Porgy and Bess," and "Fiddler on the Roof," and original works such as "Han-ne," "Victor Choi," and "Dancing City", as well as Korean productions such as "Sweet, Come to Me Stealthily" "Sung Chun-hyang," and "Yangbanjeon."
At the Korean Musical Awards, it earned Best Picture, Best Director, Best Stage Art, and Best Supporting Actor for "Han-ne" in 1998, Best Director for "The Marriage of Figaro" in 1999, Best Choreography and Best New Female Actor for "Fiddler on the Roof", Best Sound and Best Foreign Musical for "Annie" in 2007, Best Director and Best Music for "Turandot" in 2011, and Best Male New Actor for "Milsa" in 2017 at the Yegreen Musical Awards.
