Between Glances: A Symphony of the Unsaid

The universe is a vast macrocosm, and humanity is often seen as its corresponding microcosm. Within each person lies a condensation of the universe’s elements and forces—each of us carrying a unique inner world. Yet fully understanding even the self is no easy task; understanding others is even more difficult.

The Elephants Laugh have explored the invisible walls that exist between strangers, and the moments of connection that emerge through confronting them. Between Glances: A Symphony of the Unsaid is a continuation of this process, created in collaboration with 45 community members and performers who previously took part in The Elephants Laugh. These communities are not mere participants; they are individuals who live through and speak to the pressing issues of our society. And so, too, are the audience members who see this work.

In this performance, we invite you to spend time facing one another. The moment two people truly meet, we come upon the doors of each other’s worlds. When eyes meet, a connection begins—one that cannot be fully explained in words. This experience awakens countless dormant senses, and in that subtle tremor, we come to feel each other’s presence more deeply. Between Glances: A Symphony of the Unsaid offers an intensely personal experience to every audience member.

Each of us, shaped by our own background and life experience, repeats cycles of meeting and parting, writing our own story along the way. To face someone can be a simple, warm act of comfort—or, at times, a source of discomfort. Yet within these 45 encounters, we hope for a moment when the connection of many distinct inner worlds might become a shared chorus.

Elephant Laughs

The Elephants Laugh, a performance group that orchestrates dramatic encounters among strangers, creates works centered around three key themes: community, sense of place, and audience participation. Their performances go beyond language, exploring a variety of sensory experiences and fostering collaborative creation with audiences. Their notable works include: Bodies in the Dark (2015), Muljil (2016), Muljil2 (2018), 3pm to 3pm, 4pm to 4pm (2019), People from Doksan (2020), Unseen Turmoil (2022), Chachacha (2023)
