Shifting bodies. Breaking rhythm. Tradition, reassembled beyond the senses.

Liquid Sound, a collective reawakening traditional yeonhee through a contemporary lens, has explored the evolving possibilities of tradition since its founding in 2015. Crossing the boundaries of genre, the group has engaged in diverse collaborations—melding avant-garde gugak with electronic music, contemporary dance, installation art, and Western classical traditions. At these intersections of media and sensibility, they have dismantled established forms and reassembled new layers of perception. With works like Supercritical Fluid, Improvisation Project, and Long: Yeonhee Project Ⅰ, Liquid Sound has continually examined the collisions between tradition and the contemporary, the object and the body. For Sync Next 25, they present OffOn: Yeonhee Project Ⅱ.

OffOn draws from the structure of pungmul gut, a representative Korean folk performance, and is built around the concept of “deconstruction and selection (Off/On).” It poses a simple yet radical question: What must be released, and what transformed, for traditional yeonhee to live again as performance today? The performers’ bodies become instruments and tools; rhythmic patterns are dismantled and reconfigured in unfamiliar ways. Familiar elements—dangsan beollim, sogo dance, seoljanggu rhythms, pijori play—appear under new logics. Body, object, space, and sound slip between Off and On, loosening the lines between tradition and modernity. Out of this shifting structure, a distilled stillness and contemporary vitality emerge. And within that flow of disassembly—what new sensation might you find yourself meeting?

Liquid Sound

Liquid Sound, founded in 2015, explores the potential of Korean traditional arts to evolve into expanded artistic forms through interdisciplinary exchange. Collaborating with artists across contemporary dance, traditional performance, computer music, stage design, and more, the collective interprets shared themes from diverse perspectives. By engaging with unconventional subjects such as human relationships and tactile imagery, Liquid Sound sparks artistic imagination and fosters collaborative creation.

They have been active both in Korea and Europe, with highlights including an invited performance for the 130th anniversary of Korea–France diplomatic relations, a residency at Walnau Theater in Germany, and appearances at the Seoul Street Arts Festival and the Busan International Performing Arts Festival.
